Scouting the Explorers

La Salle looks to capitalize on its thrilling 14-13 come-from-behind victory over Temple last Sunday when the Explorers head to Duquesne and St. Bonaventure. The Explorers faced a 13-5 deficit with just over 18 minutes to play against the Owls, before Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Katelyn Fay scored the first of what became nine straight Explorer goals. With the score at 13-9 with just over three minutes to go, Kelly Furman drained a goal at 3:11, Melanie Sarcinello added free position goals within 50 seconds of each other, and Caitlyn Brostrand netted the game-tying goal on a free position shot wtih 1:05 remaining. Senior keeper Maura Malone made a stop on the other end on a Temple free position shot with 35 seconds on the clock, and Lauren Ignacio ran it down the field, drew a foul to set up a free position attempt and sank the game winner with 12 ticks remaining to complete the comeback on Senior Day.

The win broke a four-game skid for the Explorers who had struggled in conference play after posting a program-best 8-1 nonconference record in the first half of the 2013 season.

Brostrand continues to lead the squad in scoring, registering 43 points on 41 goals and two assists. Her 41 goals also ranks her fifth in the Atlantic 10 in goals per game (2.93). Lauren McDermott is second on the squad with 32 points on 24 goals and eight assists and Sarcinello rounds out the top three with 28 points on 21 goals and seven assists.

Four more Explorers round out the balanced offensive attack with at least 10 points on the season, including Fay, Furman, Erin McCabe and Alanna Diffendal.

Malone has spent the majority of time in goal, recording a 10.81 goals against average and a .407 save percentage. Her 101 saves ranks second in the conference in saves per game (7.36).

Scouting the Dukes

Duquesne has been rolling through the Atlantic 10 this year, with its only loss coming to Temple. Last weekend, the Dukes downed Richmond 11-8 and edged George Washington 6-5. Amanda Kidder recorded a seven-point weekend to lead the squad.

The Dukes enter with a 9-5 record, having gone 5-4 in nonconference action with losses to ranked opponents Penn State, Notre Dame and Stony Brook. So far in A-10 play, they have beaten St. Bonaventure and Saint Joseph's in addition to Richmond and GW.

Seven players have at least 20 points with an additional two with 10+ points. Kidder leads the team and is fourth in the conference with 55 points on 42 goals and 13 assists. Haley Marafioti is also ranked in the top 10 in the league with 47 points on 26 goals and 21 assists. Caitlin Prince rounds out the top three with 36 points on 31 goals and five assists.

Kristen Gregory, this week's A-10 Defensive Player of the Week, is third among starting goalies in the league with a scant 8.95 goals against average and is top in the A-10 with a .471 save percentage.

Scouting the Bonnies

St. Bonaventure is still searching for its first Atlantic 10 win of the season after falling to both GW and Richmond last weekend. The Bonnies did, however, snap a seven-game losing streak when they stepped out of A-10 play for a midweek contest against Detroit Mercy on Wednesday. They topped the Titans 15-9 behind five goals and one assist from Erin Thomas.

The Bonnies went 6-4 in nonconference play, including the first shutout in program history when they downed Delaware State 19-0.

Jenna Schlagenhauf is the Bonnies go-to scorer as she has racked up 49 points on 36 goals and 13 assists. Thomas, the team's second-leading scorer, is at 25 points on 18 goals and seven assists. Taylor Ventre rounds out the top three with 13 goals and five assists for 18 points.

Karly Kocis and Sara Schlagenhauf have split time in goal, with Kocis playing 532 minutes and Schlagenhauf playing 367 minutes. Kocis is recording a 14.42 goals against average and .405 save percentage. Schlagenhauf is recording a 10.94 goals against average and .402 save percentage.
