Lacrosse Drops 20-6 Decision at Duquesne

PITTSBURGH - Duquesne raced out to an 8-1 lead and held on as La Salle lacrosse dropped a 20-6 decision against the Dukes on Friday afternoon in Pittsburgh.

Melanie Sarcinello and Caitlyn Brostrand scored two goals each for the Explorers (9-6, 1-5 Atlantic 10). Lauren Ignacio and Alanna Diffendal added one goal each.

Duquesne's Meredith Dunn led all scorers with five goals and one assist, and a trio of Dukes added three goals each.

Brostrand opened the game's scoring 1:39 into the contest, her team-leading 42nd goal of the season.

The Dukes (10-5, 5-1 Atlantic 10) responded with eight straight goals in the next 12 minutes of play.

Diffendal drained an unassisted shot at 14:27 to break up the Dukes' run and Sarcinello scored less than three minutes later to draw within 8-3.

After one Duquesne goal, Brostrand scored her second at 6:56 to put the score at 9-4, but that was the closest the Explorers would get the remainder of the contest.

The Dukes added six more spanning the two halves to take a 15-4 lead. Ignacio scored with just over 23 minutes remaining on a man-up opportunity.

Sarcinello added her second goal of the game at 9:20.

Duquesne outshot the Explorers 28-15 and won the draw control battle 17-12. The Dukes also picked up 10 ground balls to the Explorers' five.

Maura Malone took the decision, making two saves in 42:28. Savanna Smith also made two saves in 17:32. Kristen Gregory made seven saves in the Dukes' win.

The Explorers wrap up the 2013 season on Sunday when they visit St. Bonaventure at 1 p.m.
