First Half Run Pushes GW Past La Salle, 12-3

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - George Washington built a 6-0 halftime lead and held on to defeat the La Salle lacrosse squad 12-3 on Friday afternoon.

Caitlyn Brostrand got the Explorers (8-3, 0-2 Atlantic 10) on the board early in the second half, with her team-leading 24th and 25th goals of the season. Melanie Sarcinello added the third Explorer score with 12:37 remaining in the game.

Lindsey DiAntonio led the home squad with three goals, and three other Colonials added two apiece.

The Colonials (7-4, 2-0 Atlantic 10) got on the board just under four minutes into play on a Jordy Bathras unassisted goal. They added two more in the next five minutes before the Explorer defense kept them out of the net for 10 minutes spanning the middle of the first half. Jamie Bumgardner scored her first goal of the game to break up the scoreless streak, and Rachel Mia added two scores before the halftime break.

Brostrand got the Explorers' first goal 52 seconds in the second half and scored again just over a minute later to draw the Explorers within 6-2.

That was the closest the squad would get as the relentless Colonial attack added two more scores to go up 8-2, and added four more after Sarcinello's goal.

The Colonials owned a 31-13 shot advantage and won the battle of ground balls (25-9) and draw controls (11-6).

The Explorers return home on Sunday (4/7) when they host A-10 foe Richmond at 1 p.m. The squad is hosting its first Alumni & Little Explorers' Day, and will have activities and refreshments after the game for fans.
