Caitlyn Brostrand and
Katelyn Fay each recorded three goals to lead La Salle lacrosse in a 19-13 setback to Richmond on Sunday in Atlantic 10 play.
The Explorers drop to 8-4 (0-3 Atlantic 10), while the Spiders improve to 4-9 (1-2 Atlantic 10).
Richmond's Caitlin Fifield led all scorers with six goals, and Kara Moschetti scored four goals and assisted on four others.
The Explorers drew first blood just under two minutes into play when
Lauren McDermott set up an
Erin McCabe goal.
Bailey Zerr got the Spiders on the board exactly three minutes into the game and the Spiders rattled off three straight to take a 3-1 lead.
Melanie Sarcinello notched a goal at 21:30 to get back within one goal and
Katie Marasco drove the length of the field to knot the game at 3-3 at 18:16.
The squads traded goals within a minute of each other for a 4-4 tie before Richmond went on a decisive seven-goal run in an eight-minute span on two more Zerr goals and three Fifield scores to take an 11-4 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the first half.
The Explorers got two back before the break as
Katelyn Fay scored on an assist from
Kelly Furman, and
Maggie O'Ferrall scored with 1:35 left to get within 11-6 at the half.
Fifield scored her fourth of the game at 27:14 of the second half before a Furman goal and a Brostrand score drew the Explorers within 12-8 with 24:59 on the clock.
That was the closest the squad would get as the two teams mostly traded goals throughout the second half en route to the final 19-13 score.
The two teams were fairly even in most stat categories. Richmond outshot La Salle 33-26 while the Explorers held a 19-9 edge on ground balls. La Salle won the turnover battle 16-15 while Richmond controlled 18 draws to 16 Explorer draw controls.
The Explorers continue through Atlantic 10 play on Friday (4/12) when they head across town to Saint Joseph's for a 4 p.m. start.
