Brostrand, Sarcinello Earn Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Honors

PHILADELPHIA - Recent graduate Melanie Sarcinello and rising junior Caitlyn Brostrand were named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team. The honor marked Sarcinello's third of her career and Brostrand earned the honor in her first year of eligibility for consideration.

Starters or key reserves who have at least a 3.20 grade point average and are at least sophomores are eligible. The honorees are selected by a vote of the sports information directors at the 28 colleges and universities in the Philadelphia metro area.

Sarcinello, a Second Team All-Atlantic 10 and Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference pick, recorded over 100 goals in her career. She finished third on the team this season with 26 goals and eight assists for 34 points, despite being switched to defensive midfield as a senior. Sarcinello drained two game-winning goals, one at Fresno State and the other over Lafayette. She was the team leader with 36 draw controls and added 21 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers. She recently competed in the IWLCA/UnderArmour North-South Senior All-Star Game, as she was selected among the nation's top seniors to participate. Sarcinello graduated with a degree in Nursing.

Brostrand, a First Team All-Atlantic 10 and Academic All-Conference pick, was the team points leader for the second straight season, tallying 47 points on 45 goals and two assists. The sophomore midfielder supplied four game-winning goals, including in one-goal wins over Delaware (13-12) and Central Connecticut State (8-7), in addition to wins at St. Bonaventure and against Long Island. Her 2.81 goals per game ranks sixth in the Atlantic 10 and in the top 40 nationally. Brostrand scored 2+ goals in all but one game, and scored three or more in eight of this season's 16 contests, including a pair of five-goal games in wins over Delaware and Lafayette. Brostrand is also a Nursing major.

La Salle was the only area school to place two players on the Academic All-Area Team. The pair is joined by Performer of the Year Kelli Joran (Drexel), as well as Katie Cook (Immaculata), Meghan Fallon (Arcadia), Meg Markham (Penn), Meghan McDevitt (Saint Joseph's), Shannon O'Brien (Rowan), Stephany Parcell (Temple), Annalise Penikis (Swarthmore), Grace Stockbauer (Haverford) and Melissa Styer (Philadelphia).
