PHILADELPHIA – John McCarthy has been named to the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, the NSCAA announced Tuesday. The Hermann Trophy is the most heralded individual award in intercollegiate soccer, awarded to the country's top Division I soccer player.
McCarthy is one of only four goalkeepers to earn the preseason distinction on a list that features 34 of the nation's best talents.
"It's a huge accomplishment for myself and it's a huge honor for the team," McCarthy said. "I feel very grateful to be put up there as one of the top players in the country."Â
The rising senior,
who was recognized as one of the nation's top returning goalkeepers by Top Draw Soccer in April, has garnered second-team Atlantic 10 honors the last two seasons and was a first-team NSCAA All-Region selection in 2012.
His personal 2012 campaign was an historic one, ranking fourth nationally in saves (114), eighth in save percentage (.844), and 13th nationally in saves per game (5.70). His nine shutouts were a single-season school record en route to a mark of 23 career shutouts, most in program history. The Cinnaminson, N.J. native led the country in saves (143) as a sophomore in 2011 and was selected to the A-10 All-Tournament team.
McCarthy's squad kicks off its season with an exhibition on Saturday at Stony Brook (6 PM).
