HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Sunday's game against Quinnipiac proved to be a goal clinic as the La Salle field hockey team combined with the Bobcats for 10 goals in a 6-4 loss in the consolation game of the Asics Invitational at Hofstra University.
Maddy Tettelbach drained two goals, while
Abbey Lawrence snagged her first collegiate goal and
Mariel Papa added her second of the weekend for the Explorers (0-2).
Tettelbach and Papa were named to the Asics Invitational All-Tournament Team.
The Bobcats (1-1) struck fast as Kristin Engelke found the back of the cage just 2:48 into the contest. They added another goal to take a 2-0 lead in the 26th minute on the first of two Jessica Rusin scores.
Tettelbach got the Explorers on the scoreboard with a penalty stroke goal 1:47 into the second half.
Quinnipiac got two more in a three minute span to take a 4-1 lead in the 43rd minute. Lawrence broke up the run in the 50th minute, tipping in a penalty corner shot from
Juliana Carfagno. Carfagno and
Olivia Shoemaker were both credited with assists on the play.
The teams traded scores after that, with Papa draining the next for the Explorers in the 60th minute to put the score at 5-3. She took a feed from Carfagno on the right side and slipped it past Bobcat keeper Megan Conaboy.
Tettelbach drew the Explorers within one at 5-4 when she scored an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute, but the Bobcats got one more goal to dash the Explorer hopes off of a penalty corner in the 68th minute for the final 6-4 score.
Lisa Shaffer took the loss in goal, making four saves in the effort. Conaboy got the win, also stopping four shots. The Bobcats owned a 15-11 advantage on shots.
The Explorers return to action on Friday (9/6) when they travel to Piscataway, N.J., for a 3 p.m. contest at Rutgers.
