Maddy Tettelbach netted the go-ahead score in the 53
rd minute as the La Salle field hockey team took down Liberty, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field.
The match was dedicated to Olivia Kinney, the eight-year old cousin of Tettelbach.
The Explorers donned Team OPK (Olivia Paige Kinney) t-shirts to raise awareness for cancer research.
The Flames (4-3) got on the board first, scoring in the 32
nd minute on Jordan Richardson's first goal of the season. The Explorers outshot the Flames 10-6 in the first period, but entered halftime trailing 1-0.
That changed in the 47
th minute when freshman
Judith Sweere banged home the equalizer amidst a scrum in front of the net. The score was the first of Sweere's collegiate career.
Less than six minutes later, in a match dedicated to her cousin, Tettelbach put the Explorers ahead for good with a marker assisted by senior
Olivia Shoemaker. Shoemaker found Tettelbach's stick on a cross in front of the net that she buried past an outstretched keeper.
La Salle (2-6) was outshot by the visitors 16-14 in the match. The Explorers tallied only four shots in the second period, half of which found the back of the cage. Each squad had five corners.
Redshirt junior
Lisa Shaffer amassed four saves in the game while Liberty's Ann Jefferis turned away eight Explorer shots.
The Blue and Gold return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Penn for a 4 PM city showdown.
