PHILADELPHIA – Redshirt sophomore
Jordan Price scored a career-high 30 points as the La Salle men's basketball team earned a 73-60 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn on Tuesday night at Tom Gola Arena.
"I am thrilled with the win," said head coach
Dr. John Giannini. "We played a very good team, a team who was picked number one in their league."
Price was an efficient 10-for-17 from the floor, including 4-for-7 from beyond the arc and 6-for-6 from the foul line as the Explorers (4-0) recorded their largest margin of victory of the season. Price added six rebounds and a career-high seven assists.
Price is just the third Explorer since 1996-97 to have at least 30 points, five rebounds and five assists in a single game, joining Steven Smith and Rodney Green (twice). He is only the sixth player in Division I to accomplish the feat this season.
"I'm just looking to help my team win," said Price. "If scoring more is what I need to do, that's what I'll do."
The Terriers (0-4) remained in striking distance for much of the game, but the Explorers used a 12-2 run midway through the second half to swell their lead to 16 after a jumper by
Steve Zack with 6:13 remaining in the game. La Salle pushed their lead to as many as 19 in the closing minutes.
Zack finished with a double-double thanks to a season-high in both points (14) and rebounds (12). The senior went 5-for-8 from the field in 34 minutes and added a block and two steals to fill out his stat line.
After the Terriers trimmed their deficit to six points following a four-point play by Tyreek Jewell, La Salle's
Jerrell Wright sparked the second half run with a pair of foul shots at the 9:51 mark.
Wright filled out La Salle's frontcourt with 19 points and nine rebounds after leading all scorers in the half with 12 points. The forward also chipped in two assists and two steals.
"They had good bigs, but Steve and I have been working all summer to get the ball inside and try to score," said Wright. "That's always our game plan when we go into a game."
La Salle's offensive output of 73 points was a season-high thanks in part to shooting a season-best 46.6 percent as a team.
Brent Jones paced the Terriers with 13 points while both Jewell and Jalen Cannon finished with 11 points. Cannon pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to notch double-double.
The Explorers scored the game's first five points and took a 34-23 lead into the break.
The Explorers are back in action on Friday as they take on the No. 8 Virginia Cavaliers in the Barclays Center Classic at 9:30 PM. The game will be televised on NBC Sports Network. The Explorers will play either Rutgers or Vanderbilt to close out the tournament on Saturday night.
