Lacrosse Edged 7-6 On Late UMBC Goal

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle lacrosse squad dropped its first of the season, as UMBC edged the Explorers 7-6 on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.

Rookie Toni Massetti scored the first two goals of her career to lead the Explorers, and Caitlyn Brostrand, Katelyn Fay, Katie Wherley and Kelly Furman added one apiece.

UMBC (2-2) raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game before the Explorer defense clamped down.

Neither squad scored again until the Explorers (3-1) broke through at 10:49 on Massetti's first goal. UMBC added one more and then the Explorers closed out the first half with two goals. Fay scored with 2:48 on the clock and Massetti drained her second just 44 seconds prior to halftime to get within 5-3 at the break.

Wherley opened the second half to draw within 5-4 with just over 27 minutes left, but UMBC responded with an Alyssa Semones goal three minutes later.

Brostrand and Furman scored back-to-back goals within two minutes of each other to draw even at 6-6 with 19:27 to go, but neither squad would score again until UMBC got the game winner with 4:39 to go.

Gabby Antonelli made seven saves in the loss, while UMBC's Anna Barnett stopped nine in the win.

The Explorers outshot the Retrievers 19-15, while Retrievers edged the Explorers 8-7 on draw controls.

La Salle returns to action on Wednesday when the Explorers travel to Delaware for a 6 p.m. contest.
