Box Score
PHILADELPHIA -
Caitlyn Brostrand led the Explorers with three goals and an assist, but seven straight Drexel goals spanning the two halves doomed La Salle in a 10-8 loss to the Dragons in wind-driven rain at McCarthy Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Katelyn Fay also added two scores for the Explorers (3-3), while
Erin McCabe,
Kelly Furman and
Toni Massetti added one each.
Maggie O'Ferrall was strong defensively, recording three caused turnovers.
Drexel's Kelly Palace and Eva Winiarski led the Dragons (4-3) with three goals apiece. All three of Palace's goals and two of Winiarski's came in that seven-goal run. Joelle Hartke assisted on all three Winiarski goals.
Winiarski got her first goal 4:05 into the game on a woman-up opportunity, and Alissa Watts added a score less than two minutes later to give the Dragons an early 2-0 advantage.
The driving rains opened with little warning shortly after, which favored the Explorers early on in the storm. Brostrand responded with back-to-back goals at 23:24 and 17:53 to even the score. Fay took a feed from
Katie Marasco at 16:23 to put the Explorers up 3-2, and Massetti added a goal on an
Anna Gordon assist for a 4-2 lead.
Palace got one back at 12:47, and neither team scored for nearly seven minutes after that. However, Palace's goal proved the first of seven straight Dragon scores. Emily Duffey and Watts scored 30 seconds apart at 5:49 and 5:19, respectively to regain the lead for the visitors. Palace added her second at 1:40 to go up 6-4, and Winiarski converted with just two seconds on the clock to give the Dragons a 7-4 halftime lead.
Neither team scored for nearly 14 minutes in the early going of the second half, but Drexel added two more to take a 9-4 lead with 14:46 to go.
Brostrand and Furman scored just over two minutes apart at 13:03 and 10:59 to get within three. Both defenses held for another seven minutes until Hartke scored a goal at 3:41.
Fay took a Massetti pass at 1:45 for a score and McCabe converted a woman-up free position shot from Brostrand with 1:15 to go to draw within two at 10-8. However, the rally was a too little too late as that held for the final score.
Drexel owned advantages on shots (22-16), ground balls (13-5) and draw controls (5-2), while the Explorers won the turnover battle by forcing 19 Dragon miscues to 16 for La Salle.
Gabby Antonelli made seven saves in the loss, while Drexel's Teresha Bradley earned the win with six saves.
The Explorers remain at home through the weekend, hosting Liberty on Saturday at 11 a.m.
