Delaware Gets Past La Salle Lacrosse, 18-7

NEWARK, Del. - Delaware used a big second half to defeat the La Salle lacrosse squad, 18-7, in Newark on Wednesday evening.

Katelyn Fay led the Explorers (3-2) with three goals and Erin McCabe added two. Caitlyn Brostrand and Alanna Diffendal chipped in one apiece.

Casey Lyons led the Blue Hens with five goals and two assists. Chelsea Fay, the older sister of the Explorers' Katelyn Fay, added three goals and an assist in the sibling rivalry game.

The first half was all La Salle, with the Explorers opening up the game with three straight goals within the first three minutes of play. McCabe drew first blood just 1:17 into the contest, draining a feed from Claire Andrews.

Brostrand returned to the lineup tonight after recovering from a knee injury, and drained her team-high-tying tenth goal of the season under a minute later. Diffendal added an unassisted shot with 27:00 showing on the clock.

The Blue Hens (2-3) responded with five straight goals while holding the Explorers scoreless over the next 23 minutes to take a 5-3 lead with 4:18 until halftime.

Fay broke up the run with back-to-back goals to knot the game at 5-5 before Delaware's Caitlin McCartney scored one just before the break to give the home squad a 6-5 halftime advantage.

The Delaware offense kicked up after the break as the Blue Hens outscored the Explorers 12-2 in the second half to break the game wide open in the eventual 18-7 final score.

The Blue Hens owned a 30-15 advantage on shots, a 17-9 lead on ground balls and a 17-10 lead on draw controls.

Gabby Antonelli recorded five saves between the pipes, as did her Blue Hen counterpart Tori Zorovich.

The Explorers return to action next Wednesday (3/12) when they host Drexel at 7 p.m.
