Katelyn Fay and
Toni Massetti combined for seven of La Salle's 10 team goals in a 19-10 setback to No. 10 Massachusetts in the Atlantic 10 opener for both squads. The Explorers became just the second team this season to score double-digit goals on the Minutewomen.
Caitlyn Brostrand added two goals and
Alanna Diffendal added one for the Explorers (6-3, 0-1 A-10).
Sam Rush led all players with six goals for UMass (10-1, 1-0 A-10).
The Explorers went up 2-0 in the first four minutes of the game. Brostrand drew first blood with an unassisted shot just 2:22 into the contest, followed with Fay's first goal less than a minute later.
UMass got on the board with a woman-up goal at 25:40 by Erika Eipp, and Rory Sadoff knotted the game at 2-2 at 23:53.
Fay drained her second of the game just under two minutes later to regain the Explorer lead, but a five-goal rally by UMass over the next four minutes put the home squad up 7-3. Rush had three of her six goals in that span to give UMass a lead it would not relinquish.
Massetti broke up the run with her first goal at 16:36. Neither squad scored again until just over nine minutes left in the half when Tanner Guarino found the back of the net. Diffendal drained her goal at 5:34, and UMass closed out the half with three more goals to take an 11-5 lead. Rush added two more scores with under two minutes.
Fay scored two more goals to open the second half, one at 28:22 and another at 27:53, to draw within 11-7. The Explorer defense also clamped down, holding UMass off the board until 19:39 when Katie Ferris sparked a four-goal run for UMass over the next eight minutes to take a 15-7 lead.
Massetti broke up the run with back-to-back goals in under a minute at 11:02 and 10:11, but UMass outscored the Explorers 4-1 down the stretch for the final 19-10 tally. Brostrand scored her second goal of the game at 8:30 to round out the Explorer scoring.
UMass outshot the Explorers 32-21, though La Salle held a 15-14 edge in the second half. The Explorers were plagued by turnovers, committing 22 to just 13 Minutewomen miscues. UMass also won the ground ball battle, 26-13.
The Explorers won the draw controls, 18-13, including a 10-4 edge in the second half.
The squad remains on the road with a 1 p.m. contest at Richmond on Sunday.
