Caitlyn Brostrand Nets 100th Career Goal; Explorers Defeated at Richmond, 15-6

Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. - Junior midfielder Caitlyn Brostrand drained her 100th career goal in a 15-6 setback at Richmond on Sunday afternoon in Atlantic 10 play.

Brostrand became the ninth player in program history to hit the century mark. She entered today's contest with 99 career scores, and drained two to bring her career total to 101. She hit her 100th goal just under three minutes into the second half.

"It's great to see Caitlin Brostrand earn her 100th goal today," Head Coach Candace Taglianetti Bossell said. "I just wish we could have had a better performance so she could truly enjoy that amazing accomplishment."

Brostrand was one of two players on Sunday to score two goals to lead the Explorers (6-5, 0-2). Rookie Toni Massetti added two goals, while Katelyn Fay and Allee Ilgenfritz added one apiece.

Richmond's Hayley Ross led all players with three goals. Six other Spiders scored two goals each in a well-balanced offensive attack.

Richmond (7-4, 2-0) scored the first three goals of the game before the Explorers got on the board with Ilgenfritz's free position goal at 24:07.

Massetti scored a woman-up goal at 12:46 and Fay added her score on an assist from Tori Mitros at 7:23, while the Spiders built an 8-3 halftime lead.

Brostrand drained both of her goals in the second half at 27:24 and 20:41 to put the score at 11-5. Richmond responded with another three-goal run over the next 16 minutes to go up 14-5. Massetti added her second goal with 4:40 remaining to round out the Explorer scoring. Richmond scored one more for the final 15-6 score.

The Spiders dominated on shots, 35-15, and also on draw controls, 20-4. The Spiders also edged the Explorers 16-12 on ground balls.

"We are tremendously disappointed in the effort on the field today," Taglianetti Bossell said. "From start to finish we could not execute on the game plan or stop their players. We played very heavy footed, came out flat and unfortunately we faced a talented Richmond team that capitalized on our poor performance."

Gabby Antonelli stopped 12 shots in the loss. Richmond's Emily Boyce picked up the win while making six saves.

The Explorers return home on Friday for the first of three straight home games to close out the home schedule. They host Duquesne on Friday at 7 p.m.
