Farrell Earns MVP of NPSL Championship Game

PHILADELPHIA- La Salle men's soccer player Joe Farrell lifted the New York Red Bulls U-23s to the 2014 National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) Championship with the game-winning goal in a 3-1 defeat of Chattanooga FC in the title game at Red Bull Arena earlier this month.

The Wissahickon High School product broke a 1-1 tie in the 84th minute when teammate Sean Davis headed the ball into the box to Farrell, who spun around and delivered a goal to the near corner. The late-game heroics earned the junior the championship game MVP award.

Teammate Sammy Adjei added an insurance goal in the 90th minute to help cap a perfect 16-0-0 season for the Baby Bulls. Farrell appeared in 13 games for New York this season, netting a pair of goals to help the Red Bulls to the North Atlantic Conference title.

"Playing with RedBull U-23s this summer was a great learning experience, I believe that I grew and have bettered myself as a player," said Farrell. "I'm hoping to carry over the success I had this summer to my junior season at La Salle."

The Blue Bell, Pa. native is developing quite a knack for the dramatic on the amateur circuit during his summers away from 20th and Olney. Last August, Farrell served as a team captain and starting center back for the Lehigh Valley United 93 U19 squad that captured the National Championship.

On the way to capturing the McGuire Cup, Lehigh's keeper was disqualified during a penalty kick shootout in the regional final against the Soccer Association of Columbia, Md. It was Farrell who stepped into the net for the United, and made two outstanding saves to aid a 4-2 penalty kick victory.

Farrell has been a NSCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Third Team selection in both of his seasons at 20th and Olney, and is coming off a sophomore season where he started 19 games and finished with nine points (2 goals, 5 assists).

Farrell will be a key component for the Explorers this season, who open play at Siena on August 31 after exhibitions with Stony Brook and Farleigh Dickinson.
