PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's soccer team defeated the James Madison Dukes 2-1 on Sunday at McCarthy Stadium, thanks to goals in the second half from
Kelsey Haycook and
Danielle Marx.
The Dukes had earned the No. 24 ranking by the NSCAA last week, and are currently No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic region.
"I thought this was a huge win against a top quality program," head coach
Paul Royal said. "We knew going into this season that every game was going to be tough, so it's great when you can be battle tested against one of the top teams in the country and come out with a win."
Haycook got things going for the Explorers (3-2-2) after a scoreless first half, finding the back of the net just 17 second into the second half. Haycook gathered the ball from a scramble in the box and chipped it past the goalie to give La Salle a 1-0 advantage.
Marx scored what turned out to be the game-winner in the 58
th minute, punching in the rebound of a shot from
Jessika Kagan to make it 2-0 in favor of the Explorers. Marx also scored the game-winner in last Sunday's 1-0 over Pittsburgh.
Goalkeeper
Jessica Wiggins held off JMU's relentless offensive third, recording a game-high nine saves. The Dukes (4-3) spoiled the shutout bid in the 87
th minute to cut La Salle's lead to 2-1, but a save from Wiggins in the 89th minute helped the Explorers hold on for the win.
Â
Haycook has now recorded a point in four straight matches, and a total of nine points during that four-game span. The Explorers are 2-0-2 during that stretch.
La Salle is back in action on Friday night as they visit the West Virginia Mountaineers (4-2-1).
