PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's soccer team scored twice early in the first half and held Dayton scoreless for the final 50:02 for a 2-1 win over the Flyers on Thursday night at McCarthy Stadium.
"It shows a lot of character from our leaders," said head coach
Paul Royal. "We kept our composure, and I'm really impressed with that."
Chrissy Vollrath scored what held up as the game-winning goal following a corner kick in the 22nd minute.
Deja Davis gathered a corner kick from
Jessika Kagan near the top of the box and played it back to Vollrath, who tucked it just under the crossbar for her first goal of the season.
Vollrath's goal gave the Explorers a 2-0 lead after
Marykate Bateman's fourth goal of the season got La Salle (6-6-2, 3-2 A-10) on the board in the 14th minute. Bateman played a header from
Clarissa Kirsch-Downs and chipped Dayton keeper Kaelyn Johns to send it home.
The Flyers (5-9, 3-2 A-10) cut the lead to 2-1 with a Beth Kamphaus goal in the 40th minute thanks to a helper from Ashley Campbell.
The Explorers will look for their third straight win on Sunday when they host the VCU Rams at McCarthy Stadium at 1 PM.
