POWELLS POINT, N.C. - The La Salle golf team concluded play at the Old Dominion/OBX Invitational on Tuesday at Kilmarlic Golf Club, finishing seventh in the field of strong regional programs. Redshirt junior
P.J. Acierno was the top Explorer with his 69-71-73=213 (E) to tie for eighth in the 93-player field.
"We dug a pretty big hole early and then fought back," head coach
Brad Kane said. "It was really impressive how the guys rallied. This was a quality field and we beat some pretty good teams so it's a nice accomplishment for us."
Graduate student
Tonny Aizpun was the next La Salle golfer to finish, as his 71-72-75=218 (+5) was good enough to tie for 18th place. Freshman
Andrew Reynolds had his best showing as a collegiate player, shooting a 73-75-73=221 (+8) to tie for 35th.
Fellow freshman
Nick Geiman had the low round of the day on Tuesday with a one-under 71. His 54-hole score of 76-79-71=226 (+13) tied for 58th.
"Nick had an awesome back nine with a 31 and an eagle," Kane said. "That was after a 40 on the front. It was just the kind of rally we needed today."
Junior
Joe Markmann rounded out the Explorer lineup with a 73-80-80=233 (+20) to tie for 78th.
As a team, La Salle shot a 292 (+4) on Tuesday and carded an 875 (+11) for the event to place seventh. It is the second lowest 54-hole score in program history, behind the +8 team score at Rutgers earlier this fall.
Campbell (-23) won the event by 13 strokes over Bowling Green (-10). Old Dominion (-7), James Madison (-4), Akron (+4), Delaware (+9) and La Salle (+11) rounded out the top seven.
Campbell's Craig Hornberger led wire-to-wire with his 64-72-65=201 (-13) score, beating teammate Gaston Bertinotti (-6) by seven strokes.
La Salle has one final event of the fall season, the City 6 Championship on Saturday at Merion East Golf Club, home of the 2013 US Open.
