Lacrosse Hosts A-10 Opener Against GW On Sunday

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle lacrosse team opens Atlantic 10 play on Sunday when the Explorers host George Washington at McCarthy Stadium at 3 p.m.

Last Time Vs. Colonials
The Explorers edged the Colonials 8-7 in overtime last season in Washington, D.C., thanks to a Caitlyn Brostrand goal with 4:53 left in the overtime session. The Explorers led 7-5, but two late GW goals forced the extra session. Brostrand and Allee Ilgenfritz led all scorers with three goals each; three Colonials scored twice each.

Scouting the Explorers
The Explorers saw a three-game win streak snapped with a 12-10 loss at Drexel on Wednesday in the nonconference finale, and the squad finished an even 4-4 in non-league play. Katelyn Fay led the Explorers with three goals against the Dragons; Brostrand, Ilgenfritz and Erin McCabe added two each.

The Explorers have gone 3-1 in the last four games, compared to 1-3 in the first four. Prior to the loss to the Dragons, the squad rattled off three straight over Kennesaw State, Delaware State and Sacred Heart, winning those three contests by an average margin of 13.3 goals per game.

Fay and Brostrand - last year's leading scorers - have kicked it up in the last four. Fay has recorded 17 of her 20 points in the last four games, including a team-leading 15 goals in that span along with two assists. Brostrand has scored 11 of her 12 goals in the last four, and recorded 15 of her 18 season points in that time. She recorded a season-best five points on four goals and an assist in the team's win over Sacred Heart; the five points moved her into fifth all-time in career points and the four goals moved her into third all-time in career goals.

Ilgenfritz continues to lead the squad in scoring on the season, with a team-high 22 points on 15 goals and team-best seven assists. She recorded four of those assists in the win over Sacred Heart, setting a new career mark. Fay is second overall with 20 points on a team-best 17 goals and three assists. Brostrand is up to third overall with 18 points on 12 goals and six assists. McCabe (8g, 3a, 11p), Alanna Diffendal (5g, 6a, 11p) and Claire Andrews (8g, 2a, 10p) are also up to double-digit points for the season.

Defensively, Kerry Newby leads the squad with 10 caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Gabby Antonelli has added nine and defending Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week Anastasia Fries is up to seven caused turnovers. McCabe leads the team by far with 20 draw controls, and Brostrand has added 11. Brostrand leads all field players with 16 ground balls; Kelly Furman has picked up 13 and Fries has scooped up 11. Antonelli leads all players with 22 ground balls.

Antonelli has played the majority of time between the pipes, recording a .481 save percentage and 9.93 goals against average. Her 9.93 GAA is third in the A-10 and .481 save percentage ranks second in the A-10 and 19th nationally. Lucy Loughlin has also seen time as a reserve, with a .450 save percentage and 10.67 GAA in just over 61 minutes of action this season.

As a team, the Explorers score 11.38 goals per game and limit opponents to 10.13 goals. 


Scouting the Colonials
The Colonials opened A-10 play at Davidson on Friday, edging the league newcomers 11-10. They were down 9-7 and outscored the Wildcats 4-1 in the final 18 minutes to take the 11-10 win. Michaela Lynch led the team with three goals, and Jaime Bumgardner, Bailey Forcier and Julia Lawson added two apiece in a balanced attack.

GW went 2-6 in nonleague action, with wins over Yale (13-5) and Mount St. Mary's. (18-12). 

Rachel Mia leads the team and the A-10 with 29 goals. Bumgardner has 28 points on 12 goals and 16 assists. Olivia Boudreau rounds out the top three scorers point-wise with 16 points on five goals and 11 assists. Lynch has 15 points on 10 goals and five assists, and Forcier is up to 13 points on 11 goals and two assists.

Mackenzie Jones has handled the majority of the goalkeeping duties, recording a .340 save percentage and 12.63 GAA. Adele Wise has also seen 67 minutes in reserve action, with a .381 save percentage and 11.21 GAA.


Next Up
The Explorers head on the road for three straight, starting at George Mason next Friday (4/3). They then head to St. Bonaventure (4/10) and Duquesne (4/12) before returning home for three straight starting on April 17.
