ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The La Salle women's soccer team defeated the Navy Midshipmen 2-0 on Friday night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility thanks to goals from
Kristin Haugstad and
Fia Jonsson while
Katie Getzinger recorded her second shutout this season between the pipes.
"I thought it was an outstanding match against a very good Navy team," said head coach
Paul Royal. "I thought the special performances from our wide players, Kristin, Fia and
Jessika Kagan were the difference in the game."
Haugstad gave the Explores a 1-0 lead with her first goal of the season, handling a cross from Jonsson and beating a defender before finding the back of the net in the 45th minute. The Explorers took the one-goal lead into the break, holding the Midshipmen to just two shots on goal in the first half.
The pair switched roles for La Salle's goal in the 73rd minute, with Jonsson chipping a ball over Navy keeper Dayton Wetherby after a feed into the box from Haugstad. The goal was Jonsson's second this season.
Getzinger recorded her second shutout this season with two saves and the help of the Explorer back line, who didn't allow a shot on goal in the second half and limited Navy to just two corner kicks on the night.
"I also felt it was the most consistent effort and focus that we've had this season, which allowed us to finish the shutout," added Royal.
The Explorers look to make it two in a row on Sunday as they visit the James Madison Dukes at 1 PM at University Park.
