HARRISONBURG, Va. - The La Salle women's soccer team turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead in a span of two minutes to start the second half to take down regionally-ranked James Madison on Sunday afternoon. The Explorers (3-2-2) have now won three of their last four games, including a perfect 2-0 record on the road this weekend.
"We were so proud of the girls' second half performance," head coach
Paul Royal said. "After a very sluggish first half, it was great to see our attack come alive in the first ten minutes. Our pressure and grit definitely gave us the edge to pull out an outstanding win against a JMU squad that had just beaten Maryland on Thursday."
Trailing 1-0 at halftime,
Marykate Bateman tied the game with her second goal of the season after a corner kick.
Fia Jonsson and
Paige McDowell were credited with assists on the play.
Just two minutes later, a James Madison (5-3) foul in the box gave Jonsson a penalty kick opportunity. The senior continued her strong play this weekend by burying it in the back of the net to give the visitors the lead. She had a pair of goals and a pair of assists in the two wins this weekend.
"Our staff was most impressed with our team's leadership this entire weekend," Royal said. " I feel these moments are now creating that winning attitude that we've been so accustomed to."
Redshirt sophomore
Larisa Zambelli earned the win in her second career start after making two saves.
James Madison held a 15-7 edge in shots and 3-2 lead in corner kicks.
The Explorers remain on the road on Wednesday with a short trip to Princeton (3-3).Â
