Volleyball Heads to New Orleans Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – La Salle volleyball heads to Louisiana for the New Orleans Invitational this weekend. They kick it off against Eastern Washington on Friday at 4 p.m. before rounding out the tournament with a pair of games on Saturday, Providence at 2 p.m. and New Orleans at 6 p.m.

Scouting the Eagles...

La Salle Explorers (3-1) vs Eastern Washington Eagles (0-3)

-Eastern Washington enters the weekend following dropping three matches at the Molten Classic each of which to a 0-3 score lines. The Eagles fell to Seattle, California, and Nevada in straight sets to open their season.

-The Eagles sit last in the Big Sky conference with a .054 hitting percentage through their first three matches. They have 85 kills and 67 errors in 332 swings through nine sets.

-Senior Alexis Wesley is second in the Big Sky conference averaging 1.44 blocks per set with six solo blocks and seven block assists on the season.
Senior outside hitter Allie Schumacher leads the team with 22 kills on the year, averaging 2.44 kills per set.

Scouting the Friars...

-Providence enters the weekend following a 0-3 loss to Bryant on Tuesday. The Friars went 1-2 on their opening weekend in the Boston College Tournament. They dropped 1-3 and 2-3 decisions to Sacred Heart and Boston College respectively before closing out the tournament with a 3-1 win over South Alabama.

-The Friars sit fourth in the Big East with a .224 hitting percentage on the year. They are last in the conference however as they have allowed opponents to hit .271 against them so far this season.

-Providence sits second in the Big East averaging 1.75 service aces per set. Leading the way in aces for them is freshman Emily Stoppler who has five on the season.

-Freshman Allison Ipellizeri has proved to be the most effective hitter on the year with 41 kills so far on the year averaging a hitting percentage of .380 which is good for sixth in the conference.

-Junior Kayla Fitzgerald leads the team with 52 kills on the year averaging 3.25 per set which ranks fourth in the conference.

-New Orleans enters the weekend after going 2-1 in the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament last weekend. The Privateers 3-0 to Florida Gulf Coast before grabbing 3-2 and 3-1 wins over Presbyterian and Fordham to close out the tournament.

-Freshman Blessing Dunn ranks fifth in the conference averaging 3.00 kills per set. Sophomore Rondolyn Bryant leads the team with 33 kills on the year.

-Freshman Kaitlyn Grice is second in the Southland conference averaging 1.38 blocks per set so far on the season. Classmate Shaylene Reimer is third in the conference averaging 5.12 digs per set having played in eight sets on the season. 

Scouting the Explorers...

- La Salle enters its second tournament of the year after finishing second in the Tribe Invitational thanks to a 2-1 record. Junior Ashley Felton and freshman Jensen Sharrits both earned All-Tournament honors.

-Sharrits earned Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week following her weekend performance. She tallied 59 total digs with 24 in a three-set win over Gardner Webb. The Concord Township, Ohio native leads the conference averaging 5.43 digs per set thus far this season.

-La Salle has limited opponents to a hitting percentage of just .100 through four games which leads the Atlantic 10.

-Sophomore Bryanna Davis ranks fifth in the conference with a .400 hitting percentage on the year. She tallied 16 kills hitting .452 in a 3-0 win over Lafayette on Tuesday. The 16 kills ties for the second most in the conference in a three-set match this season.

-Junior Ashley Felton owns the second highest hitting percentage in a game in the conference this season. She went 13-23 against Norfolk State for a .565 hitting percentage.

-The Explorers recorded 11 aces in a three-set win against Norfolk State last weekend. This is the most aces in a match in the Atlantic 10 this season. 

Next Up

La Salle returns home for a Wednesday matchup against Delaware State at 7 p.m. before heading to Marist for the Volley in the Valley next weekend.
