POWELLS POINT, N.C. - The La Salle men's golf team shaved eight strokes off its first-round score and vaulted three schools on the team leaderboard on the second day of action at the ODU/OBX Invitational on Monday. The Explorers shot 297 to move past Atlantic 10 foe George Washington and Philly schools Saint Joseph's and Drexel into 14th place.
Leading the way for La Salle on day two was senior
P.J. Acierno, who began his round in impressive fashion. After consecutive pars on the 10th and 11th holes, Acierno reeled off four consecutive birdies and, despite a double-bogey on the par-3 17th, made the turn at two-under par 34. Acierno closed his round at one-over par 72, a 10-stroke improvement on his first-round performance.
Also putting together a solid outing on Monday was freshman
Evan Gaesser, who took three strokes off his first-round score and carded a three-over par 74. Sophomore
Andrew Reynolds, who entered the second day tied for the individual lead at four-under 67, carded three birdies but also had three bogeys and a quad for a four-over par score of 75. Classmate
Nick Geiman was one stroke off Reynolds on the second day of action at 76, while junior
Brandon Raihl finished with a 78.
Ball State posted a seven-under par round of 277 to move past Akron and into the team lead heading into the third and final round, which will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 25. Ball State's Keegan McKinley holds a one-shot cushion over J.B Williams of Akron and David Langley of Old Dominion for the individual lead.
