WASHINGTON, D.C.- The La Salle women's lacrosse team moved one step closer to clinching a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship with a 13-11 win at George Washington on Friday afternoon.

The Explorers grabbed sole possession of the sixth place and the final spot in the tournament thanks to the win over the Colonials. A win on Sunday would clinch a spot in the championship for the Explorers.

Eight players scored for the Blue and Gold and no one player had more than two goals in a balanced scoring effort for La Salle. Sophomore
Brittany Edwards finished with a game-high off a pair of goals and three assists.

La Salle scored five of the game's final six goals to fend off a second half comeback effort from the host Colonials.

The Explorers jumped out to an early 3-0 thanks to one goal apiece from Edwards, sophomore
Nicole Black and senior
Anna Kelly. Senior
Kerry Newby assisted on the opening goal of the game while Black assisted Kelly's goal. The trio of goals came in the first 5:13 of the contest.

George Washington answered back to cut the lead to 3-1 but
Nicole Black added her second goal of the day to make it 4-1 Explorers with 21:26 remaining.

The host Colonials scored three goals in a 1:39 minute period to even things up at 4-4 with 18:20 remaining in the opening half.

La Salle would go on a 4-2 run to close out the half with an 8-6 lead. Senior
Katie Fonte, Edwards, Kelly and sophomore
Emily Martin all had goals during the run. Edwards assisted Fonte's goal and sophomore
Rachel Ceplo assisted Martin's tally.

George Washington opened the second half on a 5-0 run to take a 10-8 with 23:43 remaining in the half.

The Explorers answered back with three goals of their own to retake the lead at 11-10. Junior
Allee Ilgenfritz had a pair of goals and senior
Katelyn Fay scored one. Edwards recorded a pair of assists during the three goal run.

After George Washington tied the game at 11-11 with 17:48 remaining La Salle was able to hold the hosts scoreless for the remainder of the game while adding a pair of goals themselves. Fay scored the game winner off an assist from Black before freshman
Ashley Blanton scored an insurance goal off a Fonte assist.

Sarah Gallagher made 11 saves in the win with a .500 save percentage. Newby finished tied for a game-high four assists and the Explorers caused ten of George Washington's 17 turnovers on the day.

La Salle returns to action on Sunday as they head to Richmond noon opening draw.
