PHILADELPHIA – The Men's Soccer Team and Head Coach
Rob Irvine have formally announced to new additions to its coaching staff. Assistant Coach
Travis Cantrell and Volunteer Coaching Assistant
John McCarthy have been added to the program for the 2016 season.
Cantrell is an alum of Penn and played under Irvine in his days as a Quaker. He appeared in 67 games from 2009 to 2012 with 13 goals and 10 assists. He was named co-captain his senior season and was honored on the Second-Team All-Ivy League.
After graduating, Cantrell played in Europe for three years before returning to the States to coach. While in Europe, he played for Lidkopings FK of the Swedish Football Division 3 and Vasa IFK of Kakkonen in Finland.
"Travis brings a freshness of new ideas to the program," said Irvine. "He's a young guy who can relate to the players very well."
McCarthy graduated from La Salle in 2013 as one of the most accomplished players in the program's history. He still stands as the all-time leader in games played (75), saves (468), and shutouts (28) for the program. He currently plays goalkeeper for the Philadelphia Union of the MLS.
"We're lucky to have him considering he's a pro," said Irvine. "He's also an alum so he has an interest in the program. If you look at what he's done for the school, it's safe to say he knows a lot about goalies."
It's already easy to see the effect McCarthy has on the team this season – Goalkeeper
Mike Kirk has registered four shutouts in six games.
