PHILADELPHIA - La Salle University men's basketball standouts
B.J. Johnson and
Amar Stukes were among four Explorers named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Honors Court, it was announced on Tuesday.
Johnson and Stukes joined recent graduate
Hank Davis and Yevgen Sahkniuk in being recognized by the NABC for excelling in the classroom during the 2016-17 academic year.
Overall, La Salle's four honorees tied for fifth among all NCAA Division I institutions, behind only Belmont (6), Drake (6), IUPUI (5) and Youngstown State (5). To be eligible for recognition, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior academically, be a varsity member of a men's basketball program and achieve a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher.
"We are proud of B.J., Amar, Hank and Yevgen for their dedication to their academic endeavors," La Salle's Director of Academic Support for Student-Athletes
Christine Cahill said. "They are excellent examples for their teammates of what it means to be a student-athlete."
A Second Team All-District selection by the NABC for his prowess on the basketball court, Johnson led the Explorers in scoring (17.6 ppg) and rebounding (6.3 rpg) this past season. In the classroom, the Philadelphia native boasts a 3.23 cumulative GPA heading into his final year at La Salle as a finance major.
Stukes, who is a former Philadelphia Big 5 Scholar-Athlete of the Year selection, earns his second straight selection to the Honors Court after graduating with his degree in accounting in May. Overall, Stukes accumulated a 3.40 GPA during his undergraduate studies and has already started work towards his master's degree.
Another student-athlete that picked up a second straight honor is
Hank Davis, who rounded out his eligibility this past year at La Salle. A biology major and another former Big 5 Scholar-Athlete of the Year who will begin medical school at Temple University this fall, Davis registered a 3.73 overall GPA. The final recipient is Sakhniuk, who compiled a 3.23 GPA as an international business major.
