Former Explorers Advance to Finals of Rumph Classic

Ramon Tyrone

Men's Basketball | August 7, 2017

PHILADELPHIA - Former La Salle University men's basketball standouts Ramon Galloway and Tyrone Garland advanced to the finals of the 12th Annual Danny Rumph Classic at Tom Gola Arena on Sunday.

Playing on what once was their home court while Explorers, Galloway and Garland led Rumph Center to a semifinal victory and will take on "Chuck Ellis Workouts" for the championship at Gola on Monday, August 7 at 7:00 p.m.

Galloway, who played professionally in Turkey last season and averaged 12.6 points over 14 games, was a First Team All-Atlantic 10 player as a senior in 2013 while also earning Big 5 and USBWA honors. The Philadelphia native led the team in scoring that season, averaging 17.2 points per game while dishing out a team-high 127 assists.

The 6-3 guard averaged 18.8 points a contest over four games in the NCAA Tournament, including a game-high 24 points in the NCAA Third Round victory over Ole Miss.

Garland, who was featured by the Philadelphia Inquirer this past year during his professional stint in Iceland, is best known for the self-described Southwest Philly Floater. The shot, a heavily-contested layup with 2.5 seconds remaining, helped La Salle defeat the Rebels and advance to the Sweet 16.

Last year, the 6-1 guard averaged 26.8 points per game for Breidablik in Iceland and also averaged 5.4 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 3.4 steals per contest.

The Danny Rumph Classic is one of the premier basketball tournaments in the city of Philadelphia and the signature event for the Daniel E. Rumph II Foundation, an organization put together in memory of Rumph, who passed away due to a heart condition in 2005.

Last year, NBA All-Star James Harden teamed up with twin NBA players Markieff and Marcus Morris to help Team FOE win the championship at Gola Arena. Former NBA MVP Allen Iverson and current Philadelphia 76er Joel Embiid were also in attendance.

Tickets for the event are $15.00 (General Admission), and are available via the link above. Children 10 and under are admitted free of charge.
