PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's basketball team (0-7, 0-1 Big 5) returns to Big 5 action on Wednesday as it travels down North Broad to take on the University of Pennsylvania Quakers (4-2, 1-0 Big 5). The game will air on NBC Sports Philadelphia Plus and ESPN+ with tipoff at 7 p.m.
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:
- The Explorers are fresh off of a road trip out west as they took on #9/9 Oregon State. La Salle fell to the nationally ranked Beavers, 100-46.
- In the game, freshman Janay Sanders had a career performance posting 12 points, while classmates Kayla Spruill and Shayla Sweeney dropped seven each. The trio of freshman led the Explorers in scoring.
- Collectively, the team posted its best offensive output in the fourth quarter this season scoring 19 points.
- La Salle also finished with its best turnover margin of the season at +9, committing a season low 10 turnovers. The Explorers forced 19 Beaver turnovers, which is the most any team has forced this season.
- Sanders sits as the team's leading scorer with 8.0 points per game, while junior Shalina Miller paces the team in rebounding with 6.3 boards per game.
SCOUTING THE QUAKERS:
- Penn enters Wednesday's game with a 4-2 record, coming off of loss to Maine at the Navy Classic, 47-46. The Quakers only other loss came to #1/1 Notre Dame in South Bend earlier this season.
- The team's lone Big 5 game was a dominant win over Saint Joseph's, 65-45.
- Offensively, Penn is averaging 62.3 points per game this season with Eleah Parker (11.8) and Ashley Russell (10.8) pacing the team in scoring.
- On the glass, the Quakers are outrebounding opponents by more than six rebounds a game, led by Parker and Russell with seven per contest.
THE SERIES:
- La Salle holds the all-time series record at 35-10. The team's first met in 1974 and played each other every year since.
- Since the Big 5 started including women's basketball during the 1979-80 season, the Explorers hold a 31-8 advantage.
- Most recently, the Explorers have won two straight, including an overtime thriller at The Palestra, 58-56, in 2016 and a 66-59 bout at Tom Gola Arena just a season ago.
