PHILADELPHIA - The women's lacrosse team (4-4) begins Atlantic 10 play this week. First, on Thursday, they conclude their road trip by traveling to Davidson to play the Wildcats at 6:30 PM. Then, on Saturday, they'll return home to play at McCarthy Stadium for the first time since March 8 when they host George Mason (6-2).
Their current road trip has been a successful one with two wins in three games. After slipping against Temple, the Explorers have found a groove and beat Manhattan and LIU Brooklyn comfortably. It's tough to pinpoint certain things La Salle has done well because it seems as though they've been firing on all cylinders lately.
Senior Brittany Edwards scored six goals in the Blue and Gold's last game and leads the conference with 27 this year. Freshman Bridget Ruskey is right behind her, sitting fourth overall in the league wth 22. Fifth year senior Abbey Meehan was recently named the Defensive Player of the Week after another shutdown performance against the Blackbirds last week. And goalkeeper Lynne Frankel has been stellar all season. Together, Meehan and Frankel spearhead a defense that ranks in the top 25 in the nation.
La Salle will be tested against the Wildcats (5-3) who finished around the middle of the pack in the conference last season. Davidson is slightly better at home this year, with a 3-2 record in front of their own fans. They're fourth in the conference in scoring and have won their last three, including a 19-3 victory over Gardner-Webb last week. Goalie Rose Woolson has more saves than anyone in the A-10 with 82. Their leading scorer is Jordan Wood with 21 goals.
The Patriots (6-2) are one of the teams to beat this year. Their high-powered offense scores 14.57 goals per game, but likely hasn't faced a defense as tough as the Explorers yet this season. La Salle has only allowed more than 12 goals to one team this year. Mason has five players in double-digit scoring and their offense is paced by Chachi Kelehan (21 scores).
