PHILADELPHIA – After spending seven seasons as an assistant coach,
Kelly Broadway is ready to begin a new era of La Salle field hockey as the 14
th head coach in program history. That era will begin on Friday, Aug. 24, when the Explorers host Ohio U. at Hank DeVincent Field.
"For me, it's a dream come true to be a head coach of a Division I Philly school," Broadway said. "And at a talented program like La Salle that is known to have a good track record of success in this area."
Broadway welcomes back 13 letterwinners from last year's team, including the two leading scorers in senior
Mackenzie Karcher and sophomore
Rialee Allen. Karcher, one of four co-captains on this year's squad, ranked fourth in the Atlantic 10 with 10 goals in 2017 while Allen posted five goals and two assists in her inaugural season with the Explorers.
Also returning are senior co-captains
Logan Oh and
Megan Kida, both of whom are looking to finish their La Salle careers on a high note. Oh tallied three assists last season while Kida was one of seven players to start all 17 matches.
"I think the dynamic has changed a lot," Kida said when asked about the coaching transition. "I think the type of play we are playing gears more towards the talent that our team has, so I'm really excited for this season and what (Coach is) going to do with this team."
The final captain,
Chloe Lucky, leads a group of six juniors that provides a wide range of experience. Lucky played in all 17 contests last year, as did classmates
Emma Provost and
Lauren Lechleitner. Midfielder
Helga Karis Colbert, defender
Amanda Chapin and forward
Taylor Hafer round out the group.
Allen,
Nina Magnotta,
Emelynn Sneary,
Amber Blackshear and transfer
Jessica Hewitt comprise the sophomore class. Magnotta saw action as a defender in every game for the Explorers in 2017, while Sneary was the primary backup in goal.
Freshmen
Regan Dougherty,
Shannon O'Reilly,
Willow Oh,
Siani Richardson and
Tori Wright are scheduled to begin their La Salle careers in 2018. Oh, a USA Field Hockey Futures competitor for three seasons, joins her sister Logan on the squad.
