PHILADELPHIA - Five members of the La Salle University women's cross country team finished among the first 13 finishers in the Explorers' first meet of the season, the Temple Invitational, at Belmont Plateau on Friday.

"We always take the first meet of the season as an opportunity to get a controlled effort in to start the season," said head coach Tom Peterson. "For the most part the team stuck to the plan today, they stayed in the groups that we told them to. We were able to do a workout on the course after the race despite the rain. The last 10 days of training have been difficult and showed a little today, now we turn our attention to the next cycle of our training. It's a long way until October."

WHERE THEY FINISHED

• Sophomore Lexi Sciortino and freshman Liz Mancini led the way in seventh and eighth, respectively, with times of 24:39.5 and 24:39.9.
• The third Explorer to cross was sophomore Allana Powlette, who placed 10th with a mark of 24:45.2.
• Sophomore Deirdre Gilmore finished 12th with a time of 25:01.7, while redshirt senior Megan Connell was just behind in 13th, finishing in 25:04.8.
• Junior Rosemary Tuzzino and freshman Sarah Hanlon also competed in the season-opening race.

• La Salle will have two weeks to prepare for its next event, the Iona Meet of Champions, which is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 14.
