PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore goalkeeper
Brett Werner was named Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week and the La Salle University men's soccer team swept the Philadelphia Soccer Six weekly awards, it was revealed on Monday. Senior
Pat McCarthy and freshman
Franc Gamiz Quer were also honored.
In addition to his A-10 recognition, Werner was also one of three Explorers to be honored by the Soccer Six. McCarthy was chosen as Soccer Six Player of the Week, Werner claimed Defender of the Week and Gamiz Quer earned Rookie of the Week. The Explorers earn multiple Soccer Six honors for the second straight week, while the trio joins
Omari Cotterell,
Nigel Buckley and
Carlos Mora as weekly award winners this season.
Werner anchored the Explorers to a 2-0 shutout win over A-10 and Soccer Six rival Saint Joseph's on Saturday. He made a season-high nine saves, including six in the second half, to record his second clean sheet of the season. It's Werner's first career Defensive Player of the Week honor from both the A-10 and Soccer Six after earning Rookie of the Week accolades from both on separate occasions last season.
McCarthy scored two goals over a 1-0-1 week for La Salle, finding the back of the net in both contests. On Tuesday, he tied the game at one apiece with a tally in the 12th minute of a 2-2 draw with NJIT. The co-captain then helped La Salle defeat Saint Joseph's on Saturday with a goal in the 21st minute. It's his third career Soccer Six Player of the Week nod and second award of the season after earning A-10 Player of the Week on Sept. 3.
Gamiz Quer was a key component in the Explorers' 2-0 shutout win over Saint Joseph's on Saturday. In the victory over the Hawks, Gamiz Quer scored the game-winning goal in the 11th minute for his first collegiate tally, while also leading the defense to its third shutout of the year. It's the first award of Franc's career.
Through 11 contests, La Salle is 6-4-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the Atlantic 10. The Explorers will continue conference play on Wednesday at Rhode Island at 7 p.m.
