Turnovers Prove Costly to Men's Basketball in Loss at Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle University men's basketball team matched a season-high with 21 turnovers and suffered through an off shooting night in a 72-62 loss at Saint Joseph's on Saturday evening. The Explorers connected on just six three-pointers and shot 31.4 percent from the floor in the defeat.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a jumper from sophomore David Beatty opened the scoring and gave the Explorers an early lead, Lamarr Kimble registered seven straight points for his team and pushed the Hawks in front, 7-3.
  • A three from junior Traci Carter cut La Salle's deficit to 10-9, and the game remained a one-possession contest for the next five minutes with both teams struggling to score.
  • Kimble drained a three-pointer with 9:27 to go in the opening half to bump St. Joe's lead to 19-15, as the redshirt junior had scored 12 of his team's 19 points to that point.
  • Two more free throws by Kimble nudged the Hawks further in front at 21-16, before six unanswered by La Salle briefly turned the tides.
  • Carter and junior Isiah Deas each made a pair of free throws, and freshman Jared Kimbrough converted in the paint to give the Explorers a one-point lead with 5:05 on the clock.
  • The Hawks responded with seven straight points and entered the locker room with a 33-26 advantage. La Salle committed 11 first-half miscues that led to a 9-0 advantage in points off turnovers.
  • Coming out of the locker room, Deas connected on a three-pointer to bring the Explorers to within 33-29 with 19:41 remaining.
  • Saint Joseph's used a 14-2 run that spanned nearly five minutes to put the score at 47-31 and break the game open.
  • La Salle did draw to within eight with under two minutes remaining, before the Hawks converted seven of 10 from the free-throw line down the stretch to seal the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • La Salle had a decided advantage in the rebounding battle, 42-29, as Beatty led the way with a career-high 12 boards (11 defensive).
  • Junior Saul Phiri led the Explorers with 17 points, including a 6-for-6 performance at the charity stripe. La Salle went 24-of-29 from the free-throw line for the game.
  • Clover registered 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Kimble finished with 18 points.
  • The Explorers did do a nice job bottling up the A-10's leading scorer, Charlie Brown, who finished with just nine points on 2-of-13 shooting.
  • Carter closed with 11 points, six assists and five rebounds in 35 minutes of action.
