NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Senior
Anthony Hawthorne of the La Salle men's track and field team was named Atlantic 10 Track Performer of the Week on Tuesday following his record-breaking performance at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational over the weekend.
Hawthorne broke the school record in the 800-meter run on Saturday with a time of 1:49.40. That mark just eclipsed
Nathan Gillis's previous record of 1:49.49 and it is the top 800 mark in the Atlantic 10 this season. Hawthorne finished fourth out of 291 runners in the event.
It's the second A-10 Track Performer of the Week award of Hawthorne's career and his first during the indoor season. La Salle has now won the award three times this season, as Hawthorne joins Gillis (1/21) and
Ibrahim Kedir (12/10).
Hawthorne and the Explorers will have just under two weeks to prepare before the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships Feb. 29-March 1.
