FAIRFAX, Va. – Three Explorers recorded double figure scoring totals, led by sophomore
Kayla Spruill with her second straight double-double on Saturday as the La Salle women's basketball team (13-16, 7-9 A-10) trumped George Mason (9-20, 3-13 A-10), 64-59.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- La Salle connected on a pair of three pointers out of the gate which forced Mason to take a timeout after just 42 seconds of play. The Patriots regrouped with the next five points and a 15-8 advantage through the remainder of the frame for a 15-14 lead after one.
- La Salle dominated the second period to jump out in front at the half. The Explorers utilized a 19-11 scoring differential with a 9-0 run packed in the middle. La Salle's defense held Mason to 15.4% (2-of-13) from the floor in the period.
- George Mason cut into the Explorers' lead through the first 5:08 of the third stanza as it outscored the Blue & Gold, 8-7. The quarter ended the same way it started with the home team holding an 8-7 advantage.
- The fourth quarter was evenly matched after 5:44 of play with the team's splitting the 18 points scored in the period. Mason pulled within a one possession game on three different occasions, but La Salle remained stout and took the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Blue & Gold outshot the Patriots 38.9% from the floor and 39.3% from three-point land.
- Spruill ended with a game high 17 points and 10 rebounds. She's registered a double-double in three of her last four games.
- Twins Amy Jacobs and Claire Jacobs each scored 12 points.
- Senior Shalina Miller corralled 10 boards.
GAME NOTES:
- The Explorers' seven conference wins ties the 2019-20 team for second most league wins this decade.
- La Salle moves to 10-5 when scoring first in a game and 9-2 when leading at the half.
- C. Jacobs is second all-time for points by a freshman, surpassing Crista Ricketts' 394 points in 2003-04. Jacobs has 398 points and is 13 shy of the all-time mark set by Micahya Owens in 2013-14.
- The Blue & Gold are now 3-0 all-time in leap year games on Feb. 29.
