Baseball Picks Up 8-4 Road Win over Mount St. Mary’s

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The La Salle University baseball team picked up an 8-4 road win over Mount St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday. Redshirt sophomore Bubba Weigel homered and freshman right-handed pitcher Nick Hammer earned his second win on the mound.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • La Salle jumped out to a 2-0 lead from the start as sophomore Connor Coolahan scored on a wild pitch and junior Tatem Levins scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore Elijah Dickerson.
  • The Mountaineers answered right back in the bottom of the first inning with two runs of their own, including a solo home run by Myles Nicholson, to tie the game at two all.
  • The Explorers used some two-out magic to go back in front in the third inning, with graduate student Ryan Guckin singling home Dickerson to make it 3-2.
  • La Salle extended its lead to 6-2 with three more runs in the third inning, taking advantage of a throwing error with two runs and then tacking on another on an RBI single from Coolahan.
  • Mount St. Mary's got back within three with a run in the fifth, but Weigel pushed it back to a four-run cushion with one swing of the bat, smacking his first home run of the season high over the center field wall.
  • Weigel delivered again in the eighth inning with an RBI single to score redshirt sophomore Nick Di Vietro, making it 8-3.
  • The Mount added a run in the bottom of the eighth, but sophomore Jordan Morales came on to pitch for the ninth inning and shut the door on the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Hammer allowed just four runs on six hits over 7.2 innings pitched to improve his record to 2-0.
  • Weigel, Coolahan and Levins all had multi-hit games for the Explorers, who finished with 10 hits as a team, the eighth time La Salle has recorded double-digit hits this season.
UP NEXT
  • La Salle's home game originally scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed, therefore the Explorers will return to action on Friday when they begin a four-game series at St. Bonaventure.
