Explorers Rally to Top Rams, Split Opening A-10 Series

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle University baseball team rallied from a 3-0 deficit and scored seven unanswered runs to defeat Rhode Island at Hank DeVincent Field on Sunday, 7-3. With the win, La Salle split its opening Atlantic 10 Conference series with the Rams at two games apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rhode Island jumped in front in the first inning on a pair of RBI doubles to take a quick 3-0 lead.
  • It didn't take long for La Salle to start its comeback as senior Jack Cucinotta led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run, his fourth of the year, to left field to make it 3-1.
  • After a shaky first due to rainy conditions, sophomore left-hander Gabe Rappa settled in nicely and held the Rams in check after the opening inning.
  • Junior Tatem Levins cut into the deficit even more in the third inning with a solo home run of his own, his third of the season, making it a 3-2 ballgame.
  • Cucinotta delivered again in the fifth inning, tying the game at three apiece with a single through the left side to score fellow senior Alfonse Sadallah, who tripled in the previous at-bat.
  • Redshirt sophomore Nick Di Vietro then gave La Salle its first lead of the game in the sixth on an RBI single to center, allowing graduate student Ryan Guckin to cross the plate.
  • The Explorers then added three more runs in the eighth as Cucinotta stole third and scored on a throwing error before Di Vietro struck a two-run single down the left field line to open up a 7-3 advantage.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • With two stolen bases on the day, Cucinotta now has 32 for his career, which puts him tied for 13th in school history and one behind 10th. He finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs and a walk as well as the homer.
  • Di Vietro also had a two-hit day, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a walk.
  • Rappa threw 109 pitches as he surrendered just the three runs in the first and scattered six hits over 5.2 innings while striking out eight.
  • Redshirt freshman Colin Yablonski got his first career win after throwing 1.2 scoreless, hitless innings of relief, while senior Colin Kennedy notched his first career save after also tossing 1.2 hitless shutout innings.
UP NEXT
  • La Salle will remain at home next as it hosts Penn for a 3 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday.
