Four-Run First Paces Baseball to 6-4 Win over Penn

PHILADELPHIA – Four different Explorers had multi-hit games as the La Salle University baseball team used a four-run first inning to defeat Penn at Hank DeVincent Field on Wednesday, 6-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Most of the scoring came in the opening inning as Penn started things off with two runs on a two-out error in the top half.
  • La Salle quickly responded though as junior Tatem Levins ripped a double to center to bring home senior Jack Cucinotta for the first run, and then Levins came home on an RBI double by sophomore Elijah Dickerson to tie the game at two all.
  • Graduate student Ryan Guckin later gave the Explorers the lead, 4-2, with a two-run single through the left side, plating Dickerson and redshirt sophomore Nick Di Vietro.
  • The Explorers extended the lead to 5-2 in the third inning when sophomore John DeMucci smacked an RBI double to left to score classmate Connor Coolahan.
  • Penn got back within a run in the fourth inning on an RBI triple and an RBI single, making it 5-4 in favor of the Explorers.
  • Guckin provided some insurance in the fifth though, hitting his fourth triple of the season to right center to knock home Di Vietro for a 6-4 lead.
  • The La Salle bullpen did the rest of the work as Mike Jenkins, Joe Messina, James Kelly, Dylan Maria, Colin Yablonski and Colin Kennedy (Sv, 2) combined for 5.2 scoreless innings of relief.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • DeMucci led the Explorers with a 3-for-4 day with two doubles and an RBI. Guckin drove in three runs and had two hits, as did Levins (2-for-5) and Dickerson (2-for-5).
  • Kennedy picked up a save for the second straight game and has not allowed a run in any of his last six games on the mound, a span that has lasted for over a month. Meanwhile, Yablonski struck out all three batters he faced.
  • La Salle (16-11) is now off to its best start through 27 games since 1985 when the Explorers also started 16-11 and went on to make the NCAA tournament and win a school-record 31 games.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers will hit the road for a four-game series at Massachusetts this weekend. First pitch of game one on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
