Explorers Sweep UMass in Doubleheader to Stretch Win Streak to Four

AMHERST, Mass. - The La Salle University baseball team swept Massachusetts in a Saturday doubleheader to stretch its win streak to four games and improve to 4-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Explorers took game one 8-5 before freshman Frank Elissalt threw a seven-inning, complete-game shutout in game two in a 3-0 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In game one, senior Jack Cucinotta hit a leadoff single and then scored on a fielder's choice by sophomore Elijah Dickerson in the first inning. Then graduate student Ryan Guckin drove in junior Nick O'Day with a double to right to give the Explorers a 2-0 lead.
  • After UMass tied it with two runs in the second inning, La Salle regained the lead in the fifth when freshman Will Binder scored on an RBI groundout by junior Tatem Levins. Sophomore Connor Coolahan then made it 4-2 when he scored on an error.
  • UMass answered in the bottom half though and played three runs to jump in front, 5-4.
  • La Salle went back on top in the sixth as redshirt sophomore Nick Di Vietro scored on a wild pitch and then Binder hit a sacrifice fly to score Guckin and make it 6-5.
  • Guckin then provided the insurance with a two-run single that gave La Salle an 8-5 lead.
  • In the second game, it was all Elissalt, dominating the Minutemen as he only gave up two hits over seven scoreless.
  • Cucinotta started the scoring in the third inning on an RBI single to score sophomore John DeMucci for a 1-0 lead.
  • La Salle then took a 2-0 advantage in the fourth when Binder drove in Guckin on a sacrifice fly.
  • DeMucci added a sac fly of his own in the sixth inning, scoring Di Vietro to provide the 3-0 edge.
