Baseball Streak Comes to an End in Doubleheader at Penn

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle University baseball team saw its six-game win streak come to an end on Saturday as Penn took a doubleheader on its home field. La Salle held a 7-0 lead in game one before Penn rattled off 15 unanswered runs, and then the Explorers' late rally in game two came up just short, 5-4.

Game 1 – Penn 15, La Salle 7 (F/7)
  • The Explorers continued to build off Friday's 22-run performance and got the bats going early again in game one as sophomore Elijah Dickerson hit a two-run double to score sophomore Connor Coolahan and junior Tatem Levins for a 2-0 lead.
  • La Salle kept swinging in the second and fired off another five runs. Dickerson struck again with an RBI single to plate senior Alfonse Sadallah before graduate student Ryan Guckin cleared the bases with a three-run triple and then scored on an RBI single by junior Nick O'Day to make it a 7-0 advantage.
  • But Penn slowly chipped away at the lead with two runs in the second before erupting for seven runs on six hits in the third inning to erase the deficit and suddenly jump in front, 9-7.
  • The Quakers kept its going with two more runs in the fourth and made it 15 straight runs with four more in the sixth to cap the scoring.
Game 2 – Penn 5, La Salle 4
  • Unlike the first game, it was the Quakers jumping on top early with four runs in the opening inning.
  • Penn then made it 5-0 in the second on a Eduardo Malinowski solo home run.
  • La Salle worked its way back in the seventh inning as Levins drew a bases-loaded walk to score Sadallah and Dickerson drove home sophomore John DeMucci on a fielder's choice, cutting the deficit down to three runs, 5-2.
  • Senior Jack Cucinotta made it a one-run game in the eighth inning with his third home run of the season, a two-run shot that plated Guckin and brought the score to 5-4.
  • But the Explorers went down in order in the ninth as the rally came up just short.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Dickerson went 3-for-4 in game with three RBI, a double and a run scored, while Guckin drove in three runs and scored on himself.
  • In game two, O'Day was 2-for-3, while senior Colin Kennedy and sophomore Jordan Morales combined for six scoreless innings of relief, with Morales racking up six strikeouts.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers will remain on the road for their next game at Coppin State on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
