Guckin Ties Triples Record in Baseball’s Series-Opening Win at Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. – Graduate student Ryan Guckin tied the school record for single-season triples as the La Salle University baseball team (30-16, 13-4 A-10) scored 11 unanswered runs to storm past Fordham, 14-2, in the series opener on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Guckin reached the milestone in his first at-bat of the game, driving his seventh triple of the season down the right field line to bring home junior Tatem Levins for the first run of the game in the first inning.
  • Fordham evened the score at one apiece though on a solo home run in the bottom of the second.
  • Once again, it was Guckin driving in another run as senior Jack Cucinotta scored on an RBI fielder's choice in the third, putting the Explorers back on top, 2-1.
  • The Explorers then made it a 3-1 advantage in the fourth when junior Nick O'Day crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by freshman Will Binder.
  • The Rams got back within a run in the fifth inning on a single and an error, but starting pitcher Colin Scanlon got a strikeout and a flyout to to end the threat and keep La Salle on top.
  • Levins led off the seventh inning with a solo home run to right, sparking an eight-run inning as the Explorers tallied seven hits in the frame and suddenly opened up an 11-2 lead.
  • La Salle continued to pour it on in the eighth on an RBI single by senior Alfonse Sadallah and a two-run single by Guckin, pushing the advantage to 14-2 as the Explorers ended the game in eight innings due to the Atlantic 10's new 10-run rule.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • La Salle is now up to 30 wins on the season, just one shy of the school record of 31 set by the 1985 team. The Explorers also improved to 13-4 in the Atlantic 10, which marks the team's most league wins since 2015.
  • Guckin ties Sam Boone with the program record of seven triples, which Boone had previously accomplished way back in 1985. He went 3-for-6 on the day with five RBI, which now puts him 10th in the program with 121 career RBIs.
  • Not to be lost in the hitting, Scanlon (7-2) put together yet another gem on the mound, allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out six over 8.0 innings. With seven wins, he is now tied for fifth in the program for single-season wins, and with 73 strikeouts on the year, he is now ninth on that single-season list as well.
  • Levins, the reigning A-10 Player of the Week, continued his hot streak, going 4-for-4 with three runs, two walks and the solo shot. Binder went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Sadallah was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
  • Cucinotta stole another base, putting his season total at 26, which gives him sole possession of fifth place on the program's single-season list.
