Baseball Tripped Up in Doubleheader at Saint Joseph’s

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle University baseball team (32-20, 15-8 A-10) dropped a pair of Atlantic 10 Conference games at Saint Joseph's on Friday, 3-2 and 11-2. Graduate student Ryan Guckin led the Explorers with six hits on the day.

Game 1 – Saint Joseph's 3, La Salle 2 (F/7)
  • Just as they have for most of the season, La Salle went on top first, bringing in the game's first run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Connor Coolahan to score redshirt sophomore Nick Di Vietro.
  • However, as was the case in Thursday's game, the Hawks responded with the equalizing run in the bottom half of the second on an RBI double, leveling things at one all.
  • Coolahan struck again in the fourth inning, giving the Explorers a 2-1 edge with a double to left field, knocking home freshman Will Binder for the go-ahead run.
  • La Salle had opportunities to extend the lead with two men on and no outs in the fifth and two on with two outs in the sixth, but the Explorers couldn't take advantage.
  • Instead, the Hawks put two men on in the bottom of the sixth and took advantage of an error that put both runners in scoring position as Langston Livingston shot a two-run double down the right field line to flip the script, giving Saint Joe's a 3-2 lead.
  • Again, La Salle had two runners on base in the seventh but just couldn't convert.
Game 2 – Saint Joseph's 11, La Salle 2  (F/7)
  • This time it was the home team going ahead early as the Hawks plated a run on an RBI single in the first inning to take a 1-0 advantage.
  • Saint Joe's then stormed ahead by five with a two-run home run, an RBI triple and an RBI single all in the second to gain full control.
  • La Salle got some life in the fifth behind RBI singles from Guckin and Di Vietro, scoring senior Tommy Toal and junior Tatem Levins to come within three, down 5-2.
  • But the Hawks blew it open from there, pouring on six runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game away for good.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Guckin went 6-for-8 over the two games with two doubles. He is now tied for fourth on the program's single-season doubles list with 19 on the year and in sole possession of fifth on the career list with 47.
  • Coolahan drove in both runs in the opening game and was 2-for-2, while Binder went 2-for-4 in the game. Meanwhile, freshman right-hander Frank Elissalt struck out three and scattered two earned runs on seven hits over 5.0 innings in game one.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers will look to clinch a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship with a win on Sunday in the series and regular season finale. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. and the game will be on ESPN+.
