Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Richmond Spiders may have been the first on the board, but the La Salle women's basketball team quickly grabbed a lead it wouldn't relinquish, defeating Richmond, 77-57 on Sunday afternoon.
The game was a first of its kind for the Explorers as the team joined forces with the B+ Foundation to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer. La Salle dedicated the match to head coach
Mountain MacGillivray's daughter, who is currently fighting Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
Not only did junior
Claire Jacobs pace La Salle to victory with a team-high 17 points, her seventh point in the game earned off a 3-point bucket in the third quarter marked her 1,000-career point. This makes her the 27
th Explorer in program history to reach the mark. She is also tied for the third fastest Explorer to reach the milestone.
La Salle now improves to 11-6 on the season and 4-1 in conference play having won its last three-straight games. Richmond falls to 12-7 overall and 3-3 in the Atlantic 10.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The teams traded buckets through the majority of the first quarter with the Explorers unable to pull ahead by more than two. La Salle came out of the media timeout on a 9-4 run to pull ahead by seven at the end of the first 10 minutes, 20-13.
- The Explorers went on a 7-0 run early in the second to create an 11-point difference in the game with just over seven minutes remaining in the frame. The Spiders were able to cut the deficit down eight, but a Jaye Haynes turnaround jumper off a turnover in the final 16 seconds put La Salle up by 10 to end the first half, 34-24.
- Claire Jacobs was the shining star of the third quarter scoring 11 points through the first four minutes of the frame comprised of one jumper and three consecutive buckets from deep. La Salle edged out the Spiders 25-19 in the stanza shooting 10-of-19 (52.6%) from the floor and 5-of-11 from deep (45.5%).
- The final quarter was all La Salle with the Explorers shooting 50.0% from both the field and three-point range. The Explorers went on a 13-2 run complete with a Kayla Spruill three to pull ahead by as many as 24 points before the media timeout. The Spiders tried to stop the bleeding in the final four minutes limiting the loss to just 20 points, 77-57.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Claire Jacobs paced the Explorers with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and 3-of-4 from the long range. She also pulled down a game-high eight boards.
- Gabby Crawford put up 16 points and added five boards.
- Haynes also ended the afternoon in double-digits with 15 points.
- La Salle out-shot the Spiders from the field 46.2%-36.5% and from the three-point range 44.4%-25.0%.
- The Explorers won both the turnover battle (11-15) and rebound battle (39-35).
- Richmond held the edge in points in the paint (28-24) and fast break points (16-9). La Salle dominated in bench points (29-15), second chance points (7-4) and points off turnovers (19-12).
GAME NOTES:
- La Salle's 4-1 record to start conference play marks the first time since the 2013-14 season when Explorers began A-10 play with a 4-0 stretch.
- The contest marks the second of the season in which every member on the bench has seen action.
- The victory snaps a seven-game skid in the all-time series against the Spiders.
- La Salle's 44.4% from beyond the arc marcs the best the Explorers have shot from the 3-point range this season.
- This is the third game this season in which the Explorers have won both the turnover and rebounding battle.
- Crawford has reached 10+ points in five of her six games this season. Claire Jacobs has reached double-figures in nine contests.
- Haynes marks her first double-digit effort since Dec. 18.
- The Explorers are now 5-4 when their opponent scores first and 6-1 when shooting between 40-45%.
- Claire Jacobs seven field goals made marks a new season-best for the junior. She has sunk at least three 3-pointers in at least seven games this season.
- Haynes' three buckets from deep marks a new career-best for the sophomore.
