Lacrosse to Open Conference Play at Home with Richmond, VCU

PHILADELPHIA – After starting their season with eight non-conference contests, La Salle women's lacrosse will open conference play on Friday, March 25 against Richmond at McCarthy Stadium before hosting VCU on Sunday, March 27.
 
Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+, with opening draw set for 1:00 p.m. against Richmond and 12 p.m. against VCU. The first 40 students in attendance against the Spiders on Friday will receive a free shirt, while three students will win a backpack in a raffle against the Rams on Sunday.
 
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:
  • Friday will serve as just the second game in 16 days for La Salle (2-6), who dropped their most recent contest to Siena on Saturday, March 19 against Siena.
  • Graduate senior Emily Johnston poured in a career-high seven goals in the loss to the Saints, eclipsing the 100-goal career mark along the way.
  • The Explorers have been strong at home, holding a 2-2 record at McCarthy Stadium.
  • A do-it-all midfielder for La Salle, Johnston holds the team lead in goals (22), points (25), shots (48), ground balls (19), and draw controls (30), while also ranking second in caused turnovers (12) in eight starts.
  • Tori Rolon joins Johnston in double-figure goals with 13, holding a 7-for-9 mark on free position shots to lead her team. Rolon earned A-10 Player of the Week honors after a five-goal performance in La Salle's season opener against Iona.
  • Midfielder Maddie Henderson has tallied seven goals and two assists while holding double-digit totals in ground balls (18), caused turnovers (14), and draw controls (20).
  • As a team, the Explorers have allowed 11.88 goals per game while averaging 8.38 themselves.
  • Through eight games, La Salle and their opponents have each secured 145 total ground balls, while opponents hold an edge of 105-88 in draw controls.
  • Goalkeepers Kelli McGroarty have split time in goal for La Salle, totaling 77 saves while conceding 95 goals. McGroarty leads the two with 41 saves.
  • La Salle was tabbed to finish seventh in the A-10 preseason poll after finishing with a conference record of 3-5 in 2021.
 
SCOUTING THE SPIDERS:
  • Richmond enters the weekend with a record of 6-2, with both losses coming to a pair of top-25 schools in No. 14 Virginia and No. 21 James Madison.
  • The Spiders started their season with five-consecutive victories including one-goal wins over Liberty and No. 16 Stanford.
  • Picked to finish third in the A-10 preseason poll, Richmond had four players named to the A-10 preseason All-Conference team in attacker Lindsey Frank, midfielder Sophia DiCenso, and defenders Jax Donohue and Brittney Wright.
  • Nine-different Spiders have notched double-digit points for a balanced Spider offense that has averaged 14.00 goals per game.
  • Frank leads the team with 17 goals, while Arden Tierney holds the team lead with 32 points.
  • In goal, Delaney Galvin has made all eight starts for Richmond while making 80 saves with 75 goals allowed.
 
SCOUTING THE RAMS:
  • The Rams come to McCarthy with a record of 4-3, including a 3-2 mark on the road.
  • After beginning their season with a loss to No. 20 Johns Hopkins, VCU rallied to win four of their next five against Old Dominion, Longwood, Coastal Carolina, and Radford while falling to ACC-power Virginia Tech.
  • Picked to finish sixth in the A-10 presason poll, the Rams are led by 10 goals and seven assists from Julianna George.
  • The VCU offense has averaged 11.14 goals per game, while conceding 11.00 per contest.
  • Goalkeeper Meghna Dawar has made all seven starts in goal for the Rams, allowing 72 goals while making 91 saves.
