Rowing Concludes Strong Weekend at Kerr Cup

Men's V4+ Kerr

Men's Rowing | April 16, 2022

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's and women's team concluded action at the Kerr Cup on Saturday afternoon, all six boats advancing to the grand finals with two gold medals secured at the Schuylkill River.

"Another strong weekend by our men," said assistant coach Ivo Krakic. "Varsity 4+ continued their undefeated season run while 2V4+ grabbed their first win of the season. Every boat we entered finished in the top 3."

Both the men's varsity 4+ boats cruised to the grand finals, the "A" team dominating their heat for an eight second lead over the field to qualify for the afternoon event. The "B" team made their own mark just after, placing second in their heat with the second fastest boat on the water in qualifying at 7:25.1, six seconds ahead of the "A" boat.

The second varsity 8+ became the third straight boat for La Salle to make the grand finals, finishing third in their respective heat behind Temple and Washington College with a time of 8:00.7.

The women's varsity 8+ boat also kicked off their morning strong, opening the qualifying round with the second quickest time in their heat, just four seconds behind Lehigh. The 7:21.6 time proved fourth fastest of the 13 boat field, setting themselves up for the afternoon grand finals.

Heading straight into the grand finals in the men's second varsity 4+, both La Salle boats finished on the podium, crossing the finish line only 15 seconds between each other. The "B" boat took home the first gold of the day for the Explorers, finishing in a time of 7:16.9. Drexel split the pair of La Salle boats, the "A" boat for the Explorers finishing just seconds behind their city rivals to make the podium as the third place boat.

In the following race, the two men's boats in the varsity 4+ had a battle for first place, the two boats finishing 1-2 in the grand finals. Pulling away, the "A" boat finished just seconds ahead of the "B" boat consisting of the boat that had been previously undefeated competing in the freshman 4+ the opening two regattas of the season. Both teams improved on their heat times, finishing with times of 7:17.0 and 7:21.9 to take gold and silver in the event.

"This was the first time in nine years that we won at Kerr Cup!" said Krakic. "This team is very motivated to make history this season and they are on the right track!"

The women's second varsity 8+ team crossed the line in 8:38.0 in the grand finals to finish sixth place overall in their first race with the changed lineup. The varsity 8+ also finished sixth, just under 14 seconds separating second and sixth place as both women's boats posted impressive times after a rigorous week of practice.

"Although not the end result we wanted, we set a new precedent today by qualifying for both our 8s in the Grand Finals," said assistant coach Kelsey Franks. "In their finals, the 2V8 fought hard in extremely tough conditions and the Varsity 8 was in a final full of surprises from every competitor. We've learned a lot this weekend about recovery between races and what it takes to be a championship crew, and we're taking those lessons into the second half of the season."
