New Rochelle, NY – The La Salle women's lacrosse team will make their 2023 season debut in New York as they take on the Iona Gaels. This was the matchup to start the 2022 season, and the Explorers finished with a 14-13 win.
The Explorers are returning 17 players from last year's 5-12 team and are welcoming in 11 new members to the team.
Scouting the Explorers –
- In 2022 the team went 5-12 overall with three of those wins coming in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
- Each of the in-conference wins were hard-fought and won by one goal in the three contests.
- Junior midfielder, Maddie Henderson, is returning for the Explorers after her 25-goal season in 2022. Within those 25 goals were two game winning goals one coming against St. Bonaventure.
- Attacker, Tori Rolon, is entering her senior season after a strong junior year performance. Rolon scored a total of 19 goals during the season, including a five-goal game against Iona.
- Senior goalkeeper, Julia Dellaratta, played in 14 games last season, starting in 12 of those. She finished the season with a 0.416 save percentage and made 69 total saves during her time in net.
- As a team the Explorers last season had 0.779 shots on goal percentage and averaged 24.5 shots per game.
Scouting the Gaels –
- Last season Iona finished with a 9-7 overall record, and a 2-6 in conference record in the MAAC.
- Looking at this season the Gaels were voted 6th in the preseason coaches' poll in the MAAC.
- Sophomore midfielder, Kira Varada is the player to watch for the Explorers. Varada was named to the All-MAAC Preseason team after her standout freshman season. She finished the year with 39 goals and 43 points.
- Emily Stewart is entering her senior year for Iona after scoring a team-leading 42 goals in 2022.
- Goalkeeper Sofia Votto played in 16 games last season and finished the year with a 0.399 save percentage.
