PHILADELPHIA - La Salle won its third straight contest and opened Atlantic 10 play with a 2-0 victory over visiting Lock Haven on Friday afternoon. Senior
Lindsay Fry and junior
Janel Paukovits scored goals for the Explorers while freshman
Lisa Shaffer made nine saves for her second straight shutout.
"I was very pleased with our play today and extremely happy with the result," head coach
Michelle Marks said. "We played a complete 70 minute, team-oriented game and capitalized on key opportunities in our attacking end. This is great momentum heading into the rest of conference play."
Neither team could generate much offense early in the contest, but the Explorers put the pressure on midway through the half. Fry took advantage of a penalty stroke to deposit her first goal of the season just eight minutes before halftime.
A few minutes later, La Salle took advantage of a penalty corner to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore
Mariel Papa threaded a pass to Paukovits on the post and the junior knocked the ball into the cage in the 33rd minute.
The Explorers (6-7, 1-0 A-10) held a 12-4 advantage in shots and a 4-2 lead in corners during the opening half.
After halftime, Lock Haven (7-9, 0-2 A-10) got its offense going, outshooting La Salle 9-1 in the second half. Shaffer, though, was up to the challenge. The reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week made seven saves after the break, including several off penalty corners.
"Defensively, we were very solid turning away a lot of pressure they were putting on us in the last 13 minutes of the game," Marks said. "
The Hershey, Pa. native has only allowed one goal during the team's three-game winning streak. For the contest, Shaffer made nine stops.
Each team had 13 shots and LHU had an 8-6 advantage in corners.
Weather played a part in the game as a lightning delay during pre-game warm-ups delayed the start 30 minutes. The second half was played under less than ideal conditions, including steady rain, dropping temperatures and strong winds.
"Starting off with a win in A-10s is really important for us as a team," Fry said. "Everyone showed up today and played hard when they were in the game. There was so much support coming from the bench onto the field."
La Salle will take its winning streak to city rival Temple on Sunday at 1 PM.
