Chylack's Game-Winner Gives La Salle 2-1 Win At Sacred Heart

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn.
– Junior Becca Chylack scored the game winner with 13 minutes to play to give the La Salle field hockey team a 2-1 victory at Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon.

"I was pleased with the way we played and finished the game today," head coach Michelle Marks said. "After our loss to Bryant our players were determined to come out and finish the weekend with a win. We had a lot of offensive opportunities and put a lot of pressure on Sacred Heart's goalkeeper. It was a great team effort and a good way to go into our last non-conference game."

Her 21 career goals place her 10th on La Salle's all-time list with Joanne Weber (1976-80). She is also tied for 7th on the all-time points list (52) with former teammate Beth Carey (2007-10).

“After two tough losses we were determined to play hard and come out with a victory,” Chylack said. “We played as a 21-man team today.”

Senior Becca Freed also had a good day, scoring the first goal of the game and assisting on Chylack's game-winner. Junior Neelam Kumar  assisted on both tallies and leads the team with four helpers.

Freed scored in the 18th minute to give La Salle the 1-0 lead, which would hold up through halftime. Nine minutes into the second stanza Sacred Heart's Hannah Robinson tied the game with her goal.

Chylack put the Explorers ahead for good when she found the back of the cage for the fourth time this season. After coming up short on two straight corners, La Salle took advantage of the third one when Chylack blasted one off the keeper and into the cage.

Redshirt freshman Lisa Shaffer had seven saves for La Salle, while Kim Stow stopped equally as many for Sacred Heart (3-8).

The Explorers (4-7) outshot the Pioneers 21-14 overall, which included 17-8 advantage in the second half. Each team had 10 penalty corners.

La Salle returns home after a four-game road trip on Saturday when it hosts UC Davis at noon in the final non-conference contest of the season. The game is also alumnae appreciation day and all former La Salle field hockey players are invited to the game and an informal postgame reception.
