Weekly Notes
PHILADELPHIA - Good things come to those who wait. The Explorers had to endure a two-hour weather delay last Friday against Rutgers before learning their season-opener had been washed out due to rain.
Then on Sunday at Delaware, the team made two trips back to the bus to wait out lightning delays in a weather-shortened 2-0 victory over the Blue Hens to open their season in abrupt style.
The Explorers (1-0-0) now turn their sights towards a city-rival, Drexel, as the team plays their home opener under the Friday night lights of McCarthy Stadium.
"There is a lot of excitement and buzz surrounding our program on campus," said head coach
Paul Royal. "The girls are excited to play in front of our home crowd."
The Dragons (0-1-0) also were at Yurcak Field on Monday and fell to Rutgers 1-0 in the season-opener for both teams.
Sophomore all-conference striker
Renee Washington scored both goals for the Explorers in Sunday's victory and has now tallied 14 in her career. Fellow all A-10 teammate
Jess Hopton also doubled up with two assists.
Senior
Melissa Sanger had a stellar game in net against the Blue Hens and made six saves en route to the clean sheet.
Drexel won the previous matchup between these two clubs last September in a 2-0 decision. The victory broke a string of seven straight losses to La Salle.
