PHILADELPHIA - Winners of five straight dating back to Dec. 29, the La Salle women's basketball team looks to go 3-0 to open Atlantic 10 play when the Explorers host Xavier on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Tom Gola Arena.
Xavier owns a 24-8 advantage in a series that started in 1992. The then-No. 7 Musketeers won 102-51 last year in Cincinnati, but the Explorers will contend with a struggling Xavier team this year that is only 3-12 and dropped its first two conference games.
Scouting La Salle (8-9, 2-0 Atlantic 10)...
The Explorers gutted out a 68-62 win over Fordham on Wednesday, rallying from an 11-point second-half deficit behind 16 straight points from
Brittany Wilson.
Wilson netted a La Salle career-best 31 points, including 22 in that decisive second half and coming just three shy of her overall career high of 34 points when she played at Northeastern. Wilson also dished out seven assists, pulled down three rebounds and added three steals and a block.
Nadia Duncan added 13 points for her third straight double-digit scoring game and fifth in the last six games.
Wilson pulled back into the team lead in scoring, averaging 13.8 ppg. She also leads the squad in assists per game (2.5) and overall steals (34). Those numbers rank her seventh in the Atlantic 10 in scoring and tied for fourth in steals.
Duncan has stepped up her offensive game lately. In addition to scoring 10+ in five of her last six games, she is averaging 12.6 ppg in La Salle's five-game win streak after averaging just 6.5 ppg before the streak started. Over the last three games, she is averaging 14.7 ppg. She also leads the squad and ranks second in the A-10 in field goal percentage, shooting 52.2% from the field.
Ruvanna Campbell continues to lead defensively, ranking second in the Atlantic 10 in overall rebounding (9.0 rpg) and blocks per game (1.9 bpg).
Scouting Xavier (3-12, 0-2 Atlantic 10)...
The Musketeers are struggling this year after being a Top 10 squad last season. They look to snap an eight-game skid, which includes losing their first two conference games of the season. The Muskies are coming off of a 68-49 defeat at Duquesne.
The 3-12 record, however, includes the team having the 14th toughest schedule nationally according to RealTimeRPI.com.
Tyeasha Moss leads Xavier in scoring with 12.7 points per contest and Lynette Holmes adds 12.0.
Jessica Pachko pulls down a team-best 8.4 rebounds per game while chipping in 8.5 points.
